The other matter I have referred to is the export of tea. This still seems to be in an un- celtsin inte. The Japanese have now been in ccup. tion of Formosa for approaching twelve years, and they have not ceased to make efforts to deflect the trade in Dolongs from Amoy, and ship direct from Keelung to Jap nand America It is, perhaps, quite natural that these efforts should be made, and a differential export tax of c.60 a picist has long existed. Amoy still manages to secure a fair share of the trade, and Chinese are certainly interested in maintaining it. As Keelung harbour la developed so the Farmora tea trade is de ciented at Amoy. The ultimate object is to make the harbour at Keelung accessible for large trans-Pacific liners, which would take the trade direct and without even the tranship: ment that now takes place. in Japanese ports,"

the White Doge rocks at the entrance of the Mis River. Two hours more and the vessel reaches Pagoda Anchorage. The journey up the Min has been picturesque, and is well you proceed by launch for the intervening 9 miles in Fanchow, or rather Nantai, where the foreign community is located across the river from the the native city. The stone bridge of "Ten housand ages" forms the connecting link with the city. You are aware on the way up that the obstruction sunk in the river in the shape of junks loaded with stone, deposited over twenty years ago at the period of the French reprisals, has not yet been removed. The junks are still undisposed of, and are a source of danger inlaunches. It is a pity the torpedo schoolatisch. ed to the arsenal at Pagoda Anchomge cannot have practical demonstrations by removing the obstruction. A hostile power which had pene
trated so far would soon make short work of what is not a real defence to Foochow, boj only a delaying barrier. The seaward defence of Fouchow, rests on the forts at the Kimpai and Minigun passes."; he'river could be tender ed impregnable to hostile, ships if these forts were p operly ainted and manned, Nature cer
tainly has done its best to render, the task of defence comparatively easy...
Foochow by this I mean the foreign.quarter at Nantai, does not exhibit any very great changes. Foreign houses have considerably in reased for missionary and school purposes, for the missionary population swells continual ly. Two out of every three foreign construc- Dans seem to be occupied by missionaries.
