WRECK OF THE LARCHMONT".
NIMÉTEEN "BURVIVORS."
GHASTLY STORIES.
One of the saddest things in the mail papers/ is the nccount of the wreck of the steamer
Larchmont on the New England coast, U.S., after a
llision with a coal laden barques The exact number of victims will probably 'notar be known) saya-Reuter's Agency; but a modefate estimate places the dead atrigo, Mrs Henry Feldman, one of the two women survivors, says that, amid the criss of anguish: and terror as the steamier sank, she heard some women singing the hymn "Onward Christian: Soldiers. The singers are thought to Kava. been a party of ten Salvation Army workers, who were kneeling on the deck as the boat: Hank,
Forty-eight bodies from the wreck of tha Larchmont were washed ashore,and it is believ ed that there have been about too other victims, The ninetcon survivors are in a precarious cone dition. They are all severely frost-bitten as the result of their terrible experiences in the open boats with the temperature: at zero. The spray continually dashed over the Bittle craft, freezing as it fell, and in almost every case the survivors, when lifted from the boats, were unable to use their limbs; ibair loga and arms banging helplessly, y

found twelve bodies, including those of several women who had been frozen to death while drifting. Captain Gray was unable to ascertain the names of the survivors owing to their pre- carious condition, and he mentions that the bodies will be left in the ice until they are handed over to the undertakers. During a monient of consciousness Purser Young told Captain Gray that there were either 75 or tos passengers on board the Larchmont, but, owing to Young's almost inaudible voice, it was im- possible to distinguish which of the numbers be meant.:
TRIBUTE TO OFFICERS AND CREW;

Nearly all the surviving passengers agree in saying that both the crew and the officers of the Larchmont behaved well, and that Captain McVey, as soon as he realised the scope of the disaster, took prompt measures rescue the passengers, giving preference to the women and children. The mob of panic. stricken passepgers was, however, almost uncontrollable., Men and women fought each other on the deck for places'in the boats and on the rafts. Many never reached the deck at all, but were suffocated below in their quarters or drowned between decks by the inrushing waters.
Within ten minutes after the collision' the boàis got away from the ship's side, just as the vestel settled low in the water, with the waves dahing over het. The bitter cold and the high seas co i pleted the work of destruction, and the little bands which got away were i decimated by the same means;

the survival of the fitteST.. Oliver Janvier, a young man, twentyono years of age, from Providence, said that he came ashore in a boat at seven o'clock on Tuesday morning with ning dead bodies as bis companions. He waded, ashore at Sindy Point with the water-up to his waist, his boat with its grim cargo floating in on the rising tide,
When the shock came," said Janvier, "1 rushed on deck. There was a scene of great confusion, the passengers rushing wildly about. In contrast, however, to the panic-stricken pas sengers, the crew sprang to their quarters. Each man at the call of the officers went to this special lifeboat, and by main force kept back the passengers from springing overboard jand swamping the bouts and rafts'as they were
lowered,"
Janvier rushed back to his stateroom to get bis clothes and to see what had become of his room mate, Henry'Rock. Rock seemed stupe- fied, and when aroused, according to Janvier's |stury, attacked him. Janvier managed to dreg Rock, Bruggling and protesting,joto, the pas sage way and there had to leave him.
A NIGHT (F HORROR.. Janvier sprang into a boat containing seven other men. As they pushed off they saw two. men struggling in the water close to them. [ fanvier threw them a ropa and hauled them on Board. His companions at the wars had hardly bent to their work again when they heard a woman's cry for help coming over the water. He called on bis companion to save her, but so beset were they by their own perils and the endeavour to keep afloat in the tremendous seas that they refused. After a time they became bebombed and exhausted, The oars slipped from their hands, and the men dropped one after another to the bottom of the boat to die, while the spray and water splashed over the sides of the boat and covered them with winding sheet of ice.
A
The boat load dwindled until Janvier was left with one oiber man, who gazed at him with a strangs look, in his half-frozen face. "This is awful," ké said. "I can't keep this up much longer. : I am going to and it all now."). And, dławing a razor, from his pocket, be cut bis throat, while Janvier sat powerless fo prevent him,
