| DEPOSIIS ÎN THE JAPANESE BANKS.

REMARKABLE EXPANSION,

During the last few years the amount of the deposits in the Japaness private banki bas shown such a remarkable expansion that the centre of the economic gravity is being gradual ly shifted from the Bank of Japan to the pri vate banks, Hitherto it has been the general practice for the latter to depend upon the assist- ance of the contral bank for todas as the amount of deposits was inadequate to meet the applications for advances. This state of affairs has now been reversed. The leading banks now possese large fùms in deposita for which they cannot find borrowers, and that surplus is Invested in various kinds of negotiable bonds, From the tables given below will be seen thì amount of capital at the disposal of the amo.. ciated banks at Tokio, Osaka, Yokohama, Kobe, Kyoto and Nagoya, and the manner in which the funds are employed-

CAN'T LOOK AT THEIR MOTHERS-IN-LAW,

*~*~AND<WOMEN HAT SPÉCIAL FISH. The Upotos live on the northern bank of the Congo, between Ikonmargo and Dabbey or between the twentieth and twenty-second degrees of east longitude, and seem to have long resided in the region. They show a marked disinclination en quit it. They live chiefly by fishing, and one of the first things to strike a visitor is that certain fish are reserved for the men, others for the women and yet a third kind for slaves. These slaves are chiefly slaves by birth or men sold for their debts, They are well treated, and opposite Iringul is an

Island in which all slaves who are incapable of working are allowed to reside by themselves. One form of semi servitude is called lisokke. This is when a man, not having money to buy a wife, sells himself to a chief to obtain one. The off- spring of such a marriage becomes tho property of the chief.

Ona very curious custom is that a man may never look at his mother-in-law. If he doen, be has to pay her a fine of 30 to 50 mitakkos, which are brass rods equal to half penny. Neither must the mother-in-law look at her daughter's husband. Children are treated with great kindness, and in fact spoil. Their mothers do not chastise them, even if the children strike them. Among the duties of the women is that of shaving their husbands. The chief amusements are ringing, dancing [975 and wrestling matches between villages. The victors are painted red, so also are corpses balare burial, but in the case of women it is not the bodies, but the coverings in which they are wrapped, that are so coloured,

The Upoios believe in life, after death and in spirits. They think their dead relatives and

As shown above, the deposits in the banks, which amounted to 224 million yen at the end of 1899, had increased to nearly 500 millions at the end of June last. A very great increase was especially noticeable during the first six months of this year, the amount of increase being go million yen, or at the rate of 15 millions a month. The amount of advances has also increased from 28, to 443 million yen during an interval of seven years under review and this, though by no means an insignificant advasco, is far below the rate at which the deposits have been increasing.

Up to about 1903 the amount of deposits fell short of that of advances by from 30 to 80 mil. lion yen annually, and consequently the banks, besides making up the shortage with the capl.

tal and reserves, had to rely on the assistance of the Bank of Japan. The position, bowever, has now been completely changed owlog to the steady augmentation of deposits, which are at the present time more than enough for the purpose of advances. Almost all the banko are now investing the whole of their capital and reserves in negotiable bonds and shares and still have a plentiful supply of funds at their command. This remarkable increase · of bank deposits is certainly a most significant indication of the economic conditions of the, country-Japan Chronicle-
