Letier read which had been found in ac cused's pocket at time of his arrent;---
August 30, 1905.. Dear Father,Since writing you a long time has elapsed, and I have not heard from you nor any of the sisters,
My long silence has been for various reasons, but none of any consequence. I am now at the Hotel Metropole and am doing very well indeed, for. I am drawing $150 and all found; this amount will, i am pleased to say, be soon raised.
Father, I am still single, but I may safely say that by the end of this year or at least the beginning of next, I shall have a home of my owd, and I may with some pride say that she is Irish and pretty.
I have been in very good health and hope you all are alike.
I will send you a photograph of myself taken only a short time ago which will give you very good idea of the state of my health. am jumping with joy as the cold weather is selling in, for it is sa to me the best time of the year and I can always take my cold bath without danger of catching cold.
Ifitis possible would the sisters mind getting together all my little photographs. I mean of myself also that of any of our salations, as i would like to have a complete set of all,
Ishall return them as, soon as I have re- Pick them cure. printed them at the studio. fally and address them to the Hotel Metropole. and it will get to me safely. Have it registered Hoping to hear from you all soon,-Yours affectionately,
P. SIDNEY HYNDMAN, Re-examined :—It is all my own fault what I have done. I received a letter from Smith asking to go to Japan with him.” I did not tell Hyndmarabout that letter: Hyndman showed Jealousy after our engagement and complained about me running around other men. There was another man besi les Smith-but no one
also.
18E YUNNAN RAILWAY.
It will be remembered that a few months ago the treatment of Coinese canlies on the Vinnan Railway formed the subject of considerable discussion in our columns. We understand that the matter was duly investigated on behalf of the French authorities, and the following official statement has now been submitted for publication:-
Two articles reproduced in the North Chinú Daily News represent the Compfing construct. ing the Yunnan railway as treating the canlies It employs with revoltis g cruelty and injustice, These accusations are without found sinn, and it is only necessary to have, exict information: about the progress of the work to' piave tfär inexactitude.
- Yonnan is a poor country, thinly populated, into which the European had only penetrated for the purposes of exploration o travel. The consequence was that it required a certain length of time to accustom the inhabitants to ...come on the works directed by foreigners-the
Chinese, naturally suspicious, were afraid of not being paid or of not being treated properly by strangers with whose methods of work they were unacquainted.
.
The number of contini employed on the railway during the three working seasonE affords conclurive evidence of their own altitude towards the work, la the winter of 1903-1904 the maximum was not beyond 10,000 to 11,000 and in 1904-1905 it was 14,500. It is evident that if the inhabitants of the country wera convinced that on the Company's works people were ill treated, ill fed, and not paid, their repugnance to come and work would have Increased, instead of diminishing, progressively. To make up for the deficiency of labourers at the commencement the Company tried the experiment of imparting conlies from various Chinese provinces. The experiments did not give very satisfactory results, the en lies thus introduced could not become necli. matized; conficis with the inhabitants led to serious disturbances, and it appears that the local authorities, displeased as this immigration, did their best to get rid of the coolles. Lastly
