The Standard states that an Anglo-Japan- ese ship-owning combine has been formed in London with a capital of £3,000,000 and offices in London and Liverpool, the latter of which will be partly staffed by Japanese. The combine are buying forty of Japan's purchased transports and several hugo cargo

The explosion in the Chatham burst the vessel to pieces, and sent three huge columns of water, sand, and debris, 2,000 feet high, The east bank of the Canal is destroyed for a distance of Goo feet, but the west bank in not damaged.. shed) around the city was entirely raised to the ground. As a result if this the natives flocked to fire churches and theatres for refuge, and there buildings were packed that night more than they had ever been during regular hours of attendance.
During the height of the storm the wires of the newly-opened electric tramway were broken, and the current created and havoc, killing 20 or 25 people before the connections could be cut of Cars we e left stationary all over the city, windows in many houses were blown in, and smashed, and trees were snapped like matches, and thrown across the thoroughfares.
STEAMERS ASHORE."
In the harbour the United States transports Logan and Ingalls, the former of which had but just returned from Tientsin, were driven on the breakwater, but it was not thought they had sustained much damage as they would frst strike on the mud bank. Every versel in the harbour dragged her, an chor, and had to get up s'eam to prevent coill- sions, while the Spanish mail steamer Alicante crashed into the Sierra Banca, which had just arrived fromongkong, sustaining damage to her side in the shape of a big hole. Fifteen fighters were driven on to the breakwater and broken up, some of them being loaded with very valuable cargoes. There was, however, no loss of life reported in the harbour,
The Observatory report showed the force of the wind to be to miles per hour, and it was esti. mated that if the typhoon had been travelling in the diametrically opposite direction the damage would have been infinitely greater. Daring the full force of the storm, as the metero logical report afterwards showed, an earthquake nccurred, but the storm apparently prevented anyone from feeling it, and all were surprised when they heard of the occurrence later. Re- parts had not come in from the outlying districts, where the centre actually passed, so it was not known, at the time pur report left, to what extent damage had been sustained there.

THE LAST OF THE "SULLY"
A TOTAL WRECK.
Messrs. E. C.. Wilks & Co. this morning received a telegram from their Mr. W. C. Jack slating that the Sully had broken up, and was now a total wreck. A later private telegram received in town states that the Silly has broken in two and the after-part has sunk in deep water.

At the close of the year under review the value of our stock was about $3,000 more than that of the previous year, the increase being principal ly in connection with the furnishing de partment. The recent destructive earthquakes in South ern Italy, involving heavy loss of life, serve once more to remind people that the proverbial stability of the earth found in the phrases "firm a rock," "old as the hills," and to en, in but a mere assumption. Savants like Professor Milne who have devoted themselves to the study of seismic phenomens, assert that the earth is really never at rest, and that earth-tremors, although often unnoticed, are almost continuously recorded by the deli cate instruments that provide a continuous history of the vibrations of the carb's crue. Professor Milne has just prepared an earth- quake map compile i from records of the past five years, and presented this to the Brit- ith Association now holding its meetings ht Cape Town and elsewhere in South Africa. He breaks up the distribution of earthquakes into a series of oval areas, and it is of great interest to see where these lie. It is strange, for instance, to see that within the period of the report the whole of Africa, including Mauris tlus, is immune from volcanic movements. 50 also North America, excluding the important exception of the Pacific Coast, down to the latitude af Mexico. So also northern Europe as well as northern Asia,. as far south as the Altai Mountains. The commanding factor. of volcanic and earthquake activity is again borne out in this map, namely, that it is round the sea-margin of the Pacific Ocean, both on the American and Asiatic sides, that the most. frequent and most severe exhibitions of vol- canic forces are to be found. The accepted theory for this is simple and plausible.
