of the Chinese. The religions of China, in common with all natural religions, bave no satisfactory answer to the old question: "If a man die shall he live again" They have no doctrine of life and incorruption that is the revelation and gift of Jésus Christ to the world. The public missionary meeting at the Home last night was well attended. Mr. W. J. Anstey, R., presided. The Rev. T. W. Pearce, of the London Mission, opened the meeting with prayer. After the reading of the report by the Chaplain, Mrs. Barnett, speaking for Miss. Postier of the Blind School, Kowloon, described the beneficent work this institution has already accomplished. The Rev. Dr. Noyes in a speech of great interest gave an irrefutable answer to the question: "Can a Chinaman, become a Christian?" He told with fine effect and much feeling the story of the Chinese servant of Judge Custis of California. When this man fell ill, the judge attended him, and did every- thing he could to save his life. After his death the judge erected a monument at a cost of one thousand dollars. On it is this one significant sentence, describ ng the judge's estimate of his servant. "He lived and died a Christian," With votes of thanks this successful anniver- sary was brought to a close.

The Earl of Lonsdale, who, after a year's tour round the world, has just arrived in London, has related to a Yorkshire Post ve. présentative some of the experiences which he encountered in India, China, Japan, Australia, and the United States.
Lord Lonsdale, who was accompanied by the Countess of Lonsdale, made the greater part of his sea journey in one of the vessels of the German Navy, placed at his service by the Kaiser, who, on more than one occasion, has been a visitor, at Lowther Castle, and whose friendship with the Earl has been shown in many other ways.
SHOT FIVE TIGERS IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES.
In India, Lord Lonsdale, naturally indulged. in some big game hunting, and during one ex- pedition at Kuch Behar the party shop five tigers in less than ten minutes.
In China, the Emperor and Empress gave the travellers every facility for forming a true opinion of the country, and they visited some of the most exclusive cities in the Empire. The travellers were given the opportunity of inspecting the great Chinese army, trained inland, and hitherto unseen by any English- man. In many respects the troops wEIG remarkably efficient, and their drill was founded almost entirely on the German drill of 1895. were mostly Moreover, their instructors
of these countries were far advanced in the manufacture of decorative pottery, the pro- duction of various textile fibres and textile fabrics, and in metallurgy, when the present centres of industrial skill in Europe and Ameria were the hunting grounds of primitive bowmen.
