A word or two to Seth and Så er before the next match might be us-ful; for, with two good men in the centre of the field waiting for the ball it is a sad mistake on the part of these two outside forwards in persist in keeping it to thenuelves so much. The result is that the ball either goes be- | bind or is taken away and driven half way up the field. The R. A. played a very defensive kame from the time ibe goal was scored against them. They, however, put the hall into touch rather too frequently, and especially when it was getting near goal. Their left forward showed to advantage, as did the right back, while the play of the goalkeeper was irreproachable. The weather was beautiful, and it was an ideal afternoon for foot- ball, the air being crisp, the sky bright, and not too much wnd. After the kick-off, at 4 o'clock, and the subsequent minutes over, one could see that the match would be keenly
contested to the finish. The V. RC vigorously attacked their opponent's goal, but were repulsed each time by the able defence of laughran and Boyle, the two stalwart backs, while Spindlay, the tall-soldier in qual, did his work admirably.
The Garrison men had several very good runs up the field, but were stopped by the opportune interference of 1 apsley, the left back of the V. R. C Throughout the first half the attack. ing was done by the Recreation Club, who, if their other three forwards had been of the. same calibre as Herton and Holmes, should have proved almost irresistible. Unfortunately their outside forwards preferred playing too much with the ball in the corners of the field instead of centering before it was taken from them. The R. The proposed contract is for carrying coal to the amount of 60,000 tons a year from the place of their production to the market in Shanghai for a period of five years, In Shanghai they will be sold at four taels per ton. In fact they cost only two taels at

Whilst Dr. Pentecost's stay among us las not been marked by any great wave, of religious enthusiasms such as we are wont to associate with revival services, yet much benefit has been conferred on the community in a quiet and undemonstrative way. The Doctor came here quietly and be bas builded
quietly, digging down at the foundation of things, His keen intellect and wide ex- perience have also thrown much needed Tight on some of the difficult problems that confront us here as a nation. He has taken pains to hold up the banner of Christian civilization, to remind us of the heritage of our forefathers and enjoin upon us the lessons which they taught. He contends, and we believe with inuch right and reason, that with- out a strong prevailing cligious and moral sestiment here we canant hope to do our best by these islands or confer on them the highest blessing within our power. Even if we bestow on them all such blessings as arise from free trade, a stable currency and sound laws with honest administration, of justice,
