THE ATLANTIC SHIPPING TRUST — One of the first effects of the Atlantic ship- ping trust has been to hit the French Atlantic trade. The Compagnie Général Transatlanti. que makes the formation of the trust an ex- cuse for asking for Government aid for French shipping. The trust is hardly responsible for. last year's bad working of the Transatlantique, but it is a good enough excuse for the moment. But an industry that has to appeal to its Government for support must be in a bad way. Artificial aids to.commerce are delusive, and, as the Stecte pertinently remarks, a French Minister can no more pravent English, Ameri- cans, and Germans from forming a great navigation company than the Emperor of Chini could.
