No one seemed to know for certain, whether the bodies were those of soldiers, or villagers. but as they anived two days in succession they confirmed the report that there had been a sharp conflict somewhere west of here. Reports now tend to show that the allied villagers are being led by a fairly able and resolute man who was previously a Boxer leader, as reference is made to his "working charms etc, and the people put forward as one of their strongest arguments for resisting the taxation that what they did in 1900 was under Imperial orders, and they should not now be punished for mere obedience. What they did then in compliance with command they are Bow doing in their own interests, and as many of them have arms, doubtless reserved from 1900, they are not to be lightly dealt with. The newly enrolled troops sent against them were either insufficiently armed or did not know how to use their rifles as they appear to have been utterly routed by the rebels: Four thousand more troops have been despatched from Peking with didet under Edict to capture or slaythe leader and disband the malcontents They are reported to have murdered a Catholic Missionary on the 19th of 3rd moon, or about

The Edict commands the fullest protection to all missionaries ar foriegners, but we know of old the value of these notifications. These rebels are merely resisting in the ordinary Chinese way what they are pleased to regard as an unright eous squeeze; otherwise one would welcome a movement which might link up with the Southern outbreak. In the sight of trade it is an unholy thing to invoke rebellion and dis- cord, but until these is come well-led, well defined movement against official corruption and mismanagement there can be no hope for China. Mrs. Archie Little has established herself for the season in Beaufort St, SW, and here, foregathers what one many call the intellect of the Far East, and the missionary element may also be encountered. Not so very far away in Grosvenor Road Mrs. Louis Little now rents a house and there Dr. Little is expected, at the end of this month on his retum from à scientific tour in Thibet.

A QUESTION OF PIGS.

Apropos of questions, one asked on Wednes day evening may possible erify your readers. Mr. Galloway Weir inquired of the Colonial Secretary whether care would in future be taken, that piga dying of disease in Hongkong should be destroyed by fire. Mr. Chamberlain made answer to a House, which smiled audibly, that an incinerator had been despatched to the Colony so that the diseased pigs, in which the hon. member was interested, could be cremated. Who shall say that the Motherland withholds a tender interest in the well-being, of her distant daughter colonies! And yel-perish the insinuation-it is whispered that even polite James regarded Mr. Galloway Weir with an inquiring air of mirth.

Mr. T. P.. O'Connor, in the current M. A. P.

tells

A STORY OF MR. CECIL RHODES, which, in view of the latter's early death, is not without a special pathetic interest. In the course of a conversation, respecting the ways of the Phoenicians and other ancient nations connected with the Dark Continent, Mr. Rhodes observed: "People like marble tombs, and monuments in Westminster Abbey, when they 'die; I don't want that. Do you remember the Roman custom? When a man had served a Republic well, he had a road named after him The Via Appia.for instance. That is my ideal. Let me but have time to make the Road from Cairo to the Cape, and let me be remembered by that." Then after a pause of carnest thought he added suddenly-"Lord, what a road it will be."

The Ministers are said to be on the track of a pelty official named Ku Ying-Ming, who holds some office in connection with the Foreign Affairs Bureau in Shantung, because he recently published a book praising the Boxer movement and all who were concerned therein, including Tuan and Tung, and applauding the attack on the Legations.
