CANTON NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent.)

RAIN.

[

CANTON, May 8th, Canton was favoured with a heavy rain last. night. This is the heaviest shower that has. fallen this year. Still a few hours' rain, how- ever welcome, will not go far toward increasing the water in the wells or flushing the street.

PLAGUE AND CHOLERA.

Plague is reported from a good many places about Canton. On honam it is said to be in creasing. Canton remains comparatively free from it. Cholera continues about the same. This last rain may go far towards checking it.

RICE.

The dealers in rice are taking occasion to raise the price of rice in view of the short crop which is expected. In Tung Kun an increase

of about 25% has been made. There is little doubt but there will be a short crop of rice but the present increase of price seems like an imposition...

FRENCH BANK NOTES. The French bank on Shameen has issued some paper money. The Chinese are not taking to it very kindly.. In the first place it is a new bank and has not yet gained the confidence of the people. Again the people say it is French and you cannot be certain."

THERAPION. Then the notes have on their backs "Canton Canton no one would honour the paper. China" and the Chinese reason that outside of

sure a more Gtting remuneration: the men who give of their best both in years and ability to the advance of learning in this country Some surprise is expressed that so comparat tively small a portion of the total devoted to education should be allocated to Cape Colany. Without entering into detail there are twenty aside for the four scholarships at Oxford set aside whole of 5. Africa of which the larger share go to Rhodesia. Eight of these 24 fall vacant each year. To the United States, on the other hand, no fewer than one hundred scholar ships have been bequeathed and fifteen to Germany, these last to be in the nomination of the Kaiser for whom Mr. Rhodes had so great an admiration. The total amount left to the Anglo-Saxon race by the Great Empire Builder reaches the enormous figure of two million pounds. The full text of the will being in all the papers which should reach you by this mail, quotation is supertinous, else would it be difficult to refrain from repro, ducing some of those sentences ringing with the sure confidence of one who never doubled of the place which bis nation is destined to fill in the future no less-nay, very much more in the future-than in the past..

During the whole week 5. Africa has stood to watch the moving procession which bare across the trackless veldt the mortal remains of the greatest of her sons. Very simple yet infinitely pathetic are the accounts coming home of the crowds white and native which streamed out to the railway station on the long, journey between Groot Schuur and the Matop pas, where yesterday Cecil Rhodes was laid in fiis last resting place over which is to be placed a plain brass tablet eminently characteristic of the man

It is unusual howadays to hear Eng people unacquainted with the Far East inquire, what part Korea is likely to play in the position arising out of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance though, in passing it may be remarked that not more than one in a hundred has any idea of the locality of Karen. An exceedingly inter esting article appeared a few days ago in the forming Postwhich set forth with some cogency the reasons which undoubtedly do exist for the leaning towards Russia rather than Japan which characterises the present attitude of that perplexing lule Empire. It is suggestive of the extraordinary ignorance of affairs connected with China which generally distinguishes the otherwise well-informed man, that it seems to have come as a completo surprise even to commercial folk at home, that the fluctuation in money values of Korea is the grave feature in trade, which is also deter mining largely the political outlook, Russia having no trade with the smail Empire, cares not at all for the peculiar methods of the Korean Mint whereas these same irregulari- ties menu a great deal to Japan whose mer-s chants practically control the commerce. Th plain facts being unknown-naturally all the dependent circumstances remain obicine, hud mistakes political and commercial multiply. from year to year. The British Far Eastern.
