NANNING CITY BOMBARDED BY KWANG-SI REBELS,

TERRIBLE SLAUGHTER..

Narrative by an Eye Witness WUCHOW, May 6th.. Considerable excitement was caused to this city yesterday when a couple ut couriers, passed through on their way to Canton bearing im portant despatches regarding the Kwang Si Rebellion. All that could be gleaned from thent was that the important city of Nanning, which had been the point where the rebels had concentrated their troops, had been bombarded. These couriers were carrying despatches from Marshal Sou to Viceroy Tao Mu praying for more reinforcements.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY MAY 9, 1902.

THE SERVICE OF SOLEMN SUP- PLICATION HELD IN MEMORY OF THE RT. HON, CECIL JOHN RHODES AT ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL. (Specially written for the Hongkong Telegraph.)

LONDON, 10th April, 1902. Cecil John Rhodes is not dead : he is only buried. To-day the tongue of St. Paul's great bell is dumb; it speaks only on the passing, of people born in the purple, and Cecil Rhodes was riot the heritor but the origin of Empire.

The day is grey, with a biting N.E. wind which nips the bursting buds of filac and privet in the churchyard grounds and shrivels the foolish early tulip blooms that thought spring had come. The great Dolland ther toometer at the North Door marks 45* F.ns we assemble at one n'clock, and the throng of special ticket holders send up the red spirit two degrees before the twenty minutes elapse ere the grent doors roll back, Stil it is very cold.

Then 'one's thoughts fly from grey cold London to warm, red Africa where at this moment the sad cortege has climbed lonely Matoppo to lay its hero in his well-won rest To us this Spring, cold though it be with the chill hand of war, presages the bright summer for the land he won-to them their solemn Autumn speaks of harvest ready for the gamering.

KEREL, BANDS ON THE WEST RIVER Late yesterday afternoon no less than nine cargo boats, bound for Nanning, returned. they having met with bands of rebels on the banks of the river. The Authorities here are in receipt of very important news, but I cannot

From an eye witness Iing to do homage to a Master's mind and glean the following interesting news. On the Masters' will. morning of the 26th April, at about nine o'clock "the inhabitants of Nunning were surprised to find that the city gates were besieged by a very large crowd, who demanded admittance. The keeper, however, refused them admission and despatched a messenger to the City Prefect to ask if these men, soms of whom were armed, should be allowed to enter the city. To this the Prefect sent an instant refusal, and gave immediate instructions that all the gates of the city were to be closed. This was immediately done and the crowd, who had previously as sembled at the main entrance to the city angrily retraced their steps and made for the direction of the rebel camps, about thres miles distant from the city. On the 27th April, another band made their appearance and, under a flag of truce, demanded to see the Prefect to arrange certain affairs regarding the pea curing of provisions Instead of reporting the matter to the Prefect, the Military Officer in charge of the trucps at once gave orders for his men to shoot the rebels. This was ac- cordingly done and, needless to say, very few escaped being either wounded or killed. The remainder at once hastened back to their camps, and the very same night the city was bonbarded.

A RAIN OF SHOT AND SHELL. According to the eye-witness, who by the way is a farmer living on the outskirts of the city, the rebels had no less than twenty odd pieces of ordnance raining round shot, shells, and other combustible matter, into the city A breach has been made in one of the walls and, had it not been for the presence of mind of a rader, the city would have been rushed This trader, who had witnessed the bombardment and knowing that that particular part of the wall would not stand the incessans pounding, posted about forty mea with burning oil on the terraces of the wall, and when the rebels attempted to rush the place they were met with a discharge of burning oil. The brigands displayed the utmost bravery, some, so fact, approached to within twenty yards of the city walls, During the bombardment another peril presented itself to the authorities. The rebels rained a

Tis only 1.20 and the Service is for 2.30, yet even now every available seat is filled, and yet the murmur of an increasing crowd steals in through the west portal.
