The Public Works Commission. The Report of the Commission appointed. on 11th October last by His Excellency the Governor to enquire into the Public Works Department, which was laid on the table at yesterday's Council meeting, is a bulky foolscap document of no less than 243 pages. In addition to the evidence of all the senior officers and overseers of the Department that of Mr. CHADWICK, the sanitary expert,, and of most of the leading engineers and architects of the Colony was taken, thirty witnesses in all being, examined, and, what is of importance, examined thoroughly. The question of the staff of the Department was gone into and the work of each particular official or group. of officials taken into consideration, and the questions of maintenance of buildings, roads, telegraphs and telephones, the upkeep of the cemetery, the working of the Building Ordinance, the water and drain age systems, the lighting of the town, the surveying of land and the office accommodation of the Department was gone into and the questions of the intrusting of Government work to private firms, and the Crown Agent system received attention.
