The bark is treated chemically, and undergoes sun- dry processes, including treatment by current of hot and cold water alternately. The result is said to be the extraction of, rubber of the best quality, which soon thickens and hardens It took repeated experiments to show the right way to go to work. The outcome is that a syndicate of capitalists in France has under taken to start, in Cochin China and Tonquin, works for turning out rubber from bark on the new system.

JOHN'S CATHEDRAL CHOIR This match, which excited little interest, was played on Saturday on the Cricket Ground The Club started fielding with scgolies and got rid of the Choir team for 3 runs. The Club could only send in nine to bat, but they made 63 and thus won the match. It was a pity that Broadbent played for the Club. He is far too good to play in this class of cricket and had he been omitted the game would have been more interesting. He had an astonishing bowling analyses in the first innings of the Choir, capturing 8 wickets for z rune." The following were the scores :-

beating Thornhill, put in a hard shot which Widdows all butler through. Walkerand Nolan got the ball between them, through a nice rass from Caulfield, and by some pretty combina tion took the ball up to the Fusilier's goal but a bye resulted. The game now became very fast and Whitney and Widdows, the two custodians, were frequently called on to save. Williams nearly scored first, by a splendid run down the field, where within five yards of the goal he shot, but inslend of putting the ball in the corner of the net he placed it right into Widdow's hands who saved by throwing the ball over the top bar. The resulting corner went wide, and the right wing of the Engineers getting the ball, a good run was witnessed, and with a long shot Wills scored. The Fusiliers kicked off and immediately assumed the offensive and five minutes from the scoring of the first goal, Shields, after a splendid ran," sent in a hard shot. The ball hit the goal post and bounced out onto Thornhill and then repounded into the net. Soon after this hálf time was called, leaving each team with a goal to their credit.
The Fusiliers muddled their kick-off and the
Engineers, getting the "ball, forced a corner off Smart. No advantage was taken of the opper- tunity, however, and the ball was taken towards Widdows. A foul from Pugh stopped the rush and Rutter, getting the ball, took it up the field and sent in a long shot at the Fusiliers' goal. Its force was spent, however, by the time it reached Whitney and it was easily cleared. Play was now transferred to the Engineers goal and several hot shots were put in, but Widdows was playing an excellent game and saved everything. In the last few minutes play was exceedingly fast and each goalkeeper was called upon, but time was called with the score standing at one all.

The referee then decided that the teams should play a further quarter of an hour each way. In the first quarter play was fairly even, but Pugh, by some good dribbling, took the

GAMBLING HOUSE RAIDED. Kwan Fu, who has been running a gambling house at 260 Queen's Road Central, was arrest- ed yesterday. Evidence of a lottery game was found in the shape of tickets etc. and he was sentenced to pay $400, or, reside in gaol for the ensuing three months. Evidently the
profits of the lottery business are large as Kwan Fu preferred to part with the $400 rather than go to gaol.
STOLE IT AND RAN.
They say that "procrastination is the thief, of time," buf. William Foithebray, a gunner at the Mount Austin Barracks, demonstrated that he also can do a little in that line. Chan Chun, a watchmaker, was approached Saturday night at his place of business by Forthebray who asked to look at a watch. Upon one being shown him he put it in his pocket and rad. The watchmaker gave chase and caught him, but received a severe beating at the hands of Forthebray before the police could interfere. A simple diet and somewhat restricted quarters at the Victoria Gaol for the next seven weeks will be the fate of Mr. Fortherbray.

Although the Fusiliers had three goals in their favour against the Engineers' one, the extra time not being played out, the referees decided that under the H. K. 5. C. Rule No 12 the game must be considered drawn.

The Fusiliers had decidedly the beat of the game right through and it was only owing to the good goal keeping by Widdows that they did not win the match. The kicking on both sides was far too hard and the ball was con. sequently frequently passed from back to back. The match we believe is to be replayed on Tuesday, the 31st December at 4 o'clock. Un-
