Admiral Kirchhoff invited the Commodore, Flag Captain of Admiral Yeh's vessel, and the -Foreign Inspector of the Forts to dine at night on board the Hansa. The band of the Hansa which Shanghai residents so much praise, was heard on board the ship to greater advantage than at the Astor House; as they were better situated for good effect on board than when in the Astor House gallery, close to the roof of the dining hall.

DEATH OF THE VICTORIA REGIA.
It was semi-officially reported that the last
rait on the Chinese Eastern Railway would be laid on or about the 14th October, and that the official opening of the entire line for trafic from St. Petersburg to Vladivostock and Port Arthur, is to take place on 3rd November.
Owing to the scarcity of fuel which is now experienced by the railway along its line, the demand for which will be constantly increasing as soon as official traffic begins, the Head Office of the railway appropriated the necessary funds and handed them overto the Department of Agriculture and Government Domains at St. Petersburg, in order that the latter might organize two separate mining parties (one geological party and one for exploration). These will prospect and explore in the regions along the line for such deposits of fuel as could be developed for the exclusive use of the rail. way.
