57. Recording of programmes has continued at a very high level and all studios at Broadcasting House have been in constant use. The Island Studios are used to broadcast mainly topical programmes. The following table gives comparisons over the past 3 years:

58. There are over 35 portable tape recorders in continuous use and these are booked out on an average of 10,000 occasions during the year.

60. In April 1972, stereo test transmissions commenced in prepara- tion for a demonstration stereo multiplex transmission in May at the time of the Radio Dealers Association Exhibition at the City Hall. Existing studio and outside broadcast equipment were converted for these stereo transmissions which emanated from Broadcasting House using a 50W outside broadcast transmitter on 96.0 MHz. Test results showed that an acceptable field strength was available from North Point to Sheung Wan and in particular the field strength inside the City Hall Exhibition was approximately 3.8 mV/M. The test transmissions were well received by the public even though the low power allowed only a limited number to receive the transmissions. Planning was carried through either to convert our main FM transmitters to stereo or to replace them with transmitters capable of stereo.
61. The stereo tests were curtailed on 25th February, 1973 after a 10 months trial period.
62. The design and fabrication of three video line sending amplifiers was carried out. They were put into service on the coaxial video
