require some reallocation of responsibilities, the general breakdown of duties of the Chinese Producers is on the following basis:

Chinese classical music and literature programmes.

News magazines.

Variety and quiz programmes.

Presentation, religion and story-telling.

Film features and documentaries.

Drama and outside broadcasts. Serial drama production.

Light music and science features.

Talks and educational broadcasts.

Women's and children's programmes.

INFORMATION PROGRAMMES

12. World and local bulletins are broadcast at 8 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. and there is also a daily Asian and Hong Kong news bulletin broadcast in Cantonese at 6 p.m. and repeated in Kuoyu, Hakka and Chiu Chow. These news bulletins are all compiled by Information Services Depart-

ment.

13. Relays of BBC news bulletins are broadcast at 7.30 a.m. and 9.30 p.m. in Cantonese and at 11.30 p.m. in Kuoyu.

14. Weather bulletins and sea area forecasts for fishermen are pre- pared by the Royal Observatory and passed through the Information Services' news desk to the various broadcasting organizations of the Colony. Special announcements of general interest are broadcast fre- quently and these become of considerable importance during emergencies such as typhoons, etc. In a territory where heavy rains can seriously disrupt land-line communication, the use of radio by the Government becomes of paramount importance in maintaining communication with the general public.

15. As a supplement to the news bulletins the evening news magazine programme "Topical Events' is broadcast every week day at 7.30 p.m. This programme, which continued to grow in popularity during the year, consists of interviews and items covering all aspects of life in Hong Kong as well as many stories with an international interest. Many visit- ing celebrities' interviews are recorded first of all in English and then translated into Cantonese for broadcasting.
