The main responsibilities of this Division include the design, construction and maintenance of seawalls, breakwaters, Government piers, the carrying out of capital and maintenance dredging, and of feasibility studies of development schemes on Hong Kong Island. The work of this Division also covers the design, construction and maintenance of navigation markers and beacons, the carrying out of marine site investigations, hydrographic surveys and underwater inspections throughout Hong Kong waters, and the control of public dumping on Hong Kong Island.

Satisfactory progress was made on most of these activities.
Construction on the remaining short section of seawall at Central Reclamation, Stage V commenced. At Western District, work commenced on Stage I of the seawall construction and reclamation which will provide sites for cargo handling, a wholesale market and a new road system. Planning of Stage II of the reclamation, which will provide a further 18 hectares of land, continued.

Planning of the reclamation at Aldrich Bay, to provide about 4 hectares of land for part of the Eastern Corridor Road, boatyard sites and district open space, also continued. Construction of two sections of the related seawall commenced.

At Chai Wan, work continued on seawalls and reclamation to protect the future cargo-handling basin.

Planning of a new breakwater off Kellett Island to increase the sheltered area of the Causeway Bay typhoon shelter was initiated.

A second passenger-ferry pier for North Point was being designed.

At Aberdeen, reclamation for the sewage screening plant to be sited near the western breakwater was completed. Construction of the seawall and reclamation at Po Chong Wan was commenced and this, on completion, will
