This Division is responsible for the investigation, planning, design and construction of major stormwater drains, sewers, sewage treatment and disposal works in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories. The Division is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of Government sewage plants and the implementation of a programme for monitoring the quality of Hong Kong waters.
Construction

Major works commenced or completed during the year on Hong Kong Island included the construction of a stormwater drain and a sewer on Ap Lei Chau, sewage treatment and disposal works for the Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay areas, Aberdeen and Chai Wan, drainage improvement works at Ma Hang, Stanley, extension of main stormwater drains in Wong Chuk Hang and reclamations in the Central District and Kennedy Town. In Kowloon, stormwater drainage extensions in the Tong Mi Road reclamation and construction of the Hung Hom intercepting sewer were put in hand. New Territories, major works in progress included the construction of the Yuen Long sewage screening plant and pumping main, the initial phase of the Tai Po sewage treatment works, a submarine outfall for Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung and repairs to Shing Mun River, Sha Tin. Works completed included a flood control channel in Tin Sam, Sha Tin, and a stormwater drain for the Au Tau departmental quarters in Yuen Long.
Planning and Design

New designs undertaken included extension of stormwater drains in reclamations in the Western District, Aldrich Bay and Aberdeen, a pilot aeration scheme to improve the water quality in Kowloon Bay typhoon shelter, the Kwun Tong sewage screening plant and submarine outfall, and sewage treatment and disposal works for Tuen Mun New Town, Sai Kung, Cheung Chau, Mui Wo and Tai O. Planning was carried out for an intercepting sewer to serve Shau Kei Wan, the training of the Lower Lan Tsuen River and extension of the Tai Po sewage treatment works to serve the ultimate development. Planning for the diversion of existing stormwater drains and sewers affected by the future line development of the Mass Transit Railway was contemplated.
Studies and Investigation

Monitoring of the quality of harbour waters, bottom sediments and the water quality at most of the bathing beaches in the territory was continued. The test results were processed and compiled in a data report.
