Seventeen local officers of the Quantity Surveying Branch and four local officers of the Maintenance Branch were granted full-pay study leave to enable them to prepare for the R.I.C.S. or I.Q.S. examinations while five local officers from the Architectural staff were granted full-pay study leave to enable them to prepare for I.O.B. examinations.

Evening and part-time day release courses at the Hong Kong Polytechnic and Morrison Hill Technical Institute in subjects pertaining to building construction, structural engineering, quantity surveying, and electrical and mechanical engineering were attended by 105 junior members of staff.

Thirty-nine students of the Hong Kong Polytechnic and five architectural students of the University of Hong Kong received summer vacation training in the fields of building construction and structural engineering.

One senior member of the Office staff attended a course at the Outward Bound School during the year.

Four Student Maintenance Surveyors, three Structural Engineering Graduates (a new training grade) and three Architectural Graduates were under training within the Office during the year. As in previous years, a training scheme for technical officers who are studying for a professional qualification (Building Surveyor or Maintenance Surveyor) was operated in conjunction with the Buildings Ordinance Office. The officers spent periods in both the Architectural Office and the Buildings Ordinance Office to broaden their experience and to assist them in their studies.

The training programme for local professional staff in the Maintenance Branch did not succeed in producing the results hoped for, only one candidate of the four who entered being successful in his professional examinations.
Welfare

Architectural Office participated in the F.W.D. Sports activities 1976/77 with satisfactory results. The Office took fourth place in the 8th P.W.D. Swimming Gala and sixth place in the 9th P.W.D. Sports Day. In the team events, the Office took first place in Sailing, second place in Lawn Bowls and Ten-pin Bowling, and third place in Basketball, Darts and Golf.
