TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT SURVEY DIVISION

The Traffic & Transport Survey Division acts as a service agency to any Government Department requiring surveys or information associated with the movement of people or goods.

The findings of the more significant surveys are issued in the form of technical reports, of which 19 were distributed during the year. A total of 29 data records was also issued, containing the results of minor surveys.

Hong Kong Comprehensive Transport Study 1973/74

9.92

Work on this study, which is being carried out by consultants, commenced in March 1973. A household interview survey of approximately 3% of the population, a hotel interview survey of transient residents, a taxi survey and a harbour screenline interview survey were carried out. The information thus obtained was put on computer tape and its analysis to predict future traffic demand began.

As part of this project, reports on two detailed short term traffic generation studies, one of the Mid-Levels and Pokfulam Areas and the other of the Feak Area, were submitted by the consultants. Work was nearly completed on a feasibility study of some 30 miles of roads in the New Territories which included an assessment of the transport requirements in the New Territories in 1983 resulting from the proposed Government 10-year housing programme.

Bus and Tram Studies

Bus route studies continued with a total of twelve reports on K.M.B. and C.M.B. routes published. A study of the main bus termini in the urban areas was also carried out and reported on. A technical report on tram route inventory and characteristics was completed and issued.

Taxi "Level of Service" Survey

9.95

A report was completed on a study to review the level of taxi Service in February 1974. It included the measurement of on-street availability of taxis, passenger waiting time and passenger queue length at taxi stands, and compared conditions with those in 1968 when there were 1,350 fewer taxis.
