Speed Studies

Vehicle speed studies continued to provide basic data for the determination of suitable speed limits on certain major roads in the Colony. Surveys at nine locations were carried out and reports issued.

Technical reports on the parking level in the urban areas of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and on the parking inventory and parking level in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung were published.
Pedestrian Studies

A survey of pedestrian characteristics in the Central District of Hong Kong was carried out and a data record issued.

Investigations of 35 pedestrian problem spots were completed and reported on. Surveys were also carried out to establish conditions at zebra crossings and the rate of discharge of pedestrians on escalators, stairways and ramps.

Other surveys undertaken included an origin and destination survey of passengers on the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal, a before-and-after study of the omission of the amber light at traffic light signals, directional counts at the Stubbs Road/Tai Hang Road Roundabout and a survey of public transport services during the F.L.B. strikes on Hong Kong Island.
AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL UNIT

The Area Traffic Control Unit, which is staffed by Traffic Engineer and Computer System Engineers, is responsible for the implementation of the West Kowloon Area Traffic Control System. This system entails the central control by computer of some 80 traffic signals on the heavily trafficked road network of West Kowloon. The aim is to reduce delay to vehicles in the area and to promote the free flow of traffic. Of particular importance in the densely populated areas of Kowloon will be the setting up of priority routes to assist the passage of fire appliances.

A contract amounting to $8.8 million for the supply and installation of the system was awarded in December 1973. It is expected that the system will be fully operational by 1976.
