9.78 Detailed diversion schemes were drawn up for Nathan Road, Kwun Tong Road and Cheung Sha Wan Road and a report was prepared outlining the problems related to the preparation of strategic plans for Central District of Hong Kong.
9.79 The Divisions were represented at the meetings of the Mass Transit Railway Station and Transport Integration Committee to discuss layouts of stations, at the Land Acquisition Co-ordinating Committee and at the Utilities Co-ordination Group.
Pedestrian Facilities
9.80 Work commenced on the installation of flashing units for all signal-controlled pedestrian crossings, 36 sets being completed during the year.
9.81 At-grade pedestrian crossing facilities were provided at twelve new locations, comprising six signal-controlled crossings and six zebra crossings.
9.82 A scheme for phasing out existing stud crossings and replacing them with signal-controlled crossings or zebra crossings where warranted was initiated.
9.83 Three temporary timber footbridges were provided across major traffic routes in Kowloon to facilitate pedestrian movements during road construction works.
9.84 Modifications were carried out to the time settings of a large number of existing traffic light signals to facilitate pedestrian movements at road intersections.
Investigation
9.85 A total of 35 traffic counts and 18 minor traffic studies were carried out in conjunction with traffic management schemes on the Island. On the Mainland, 109 traffic counts and 5 minor traffic studies of a similar nature were conducted.
Planning and Design
9.86 Examination of Town Planning Layouts prepared by the Planning Branch of the Crown Lands and Survey Office continued throughout the year. Recommendations and comments covering traffic engineering aspects were made in each case.
9.87 On the Island, a total of 41 traffic engineering schemes were prepared, including 5 segments of the long-term road proposals and 2 grade-separated intersections.
9.88 On the Mainland, a large number of major traffic engineering schemes were planned. Among the more important ones were the Cornwall Street/Waterloo Road/Junction Road Grade Separated Intersection, Access to Sha Tin Race Course, Elevated Roadway Cheung Sha Wan to Boundary Street, Flyover linking development Areas 10 and 11 in Kwai Chung and Tai Po Road Widening (Tai Po to Fanling Roundabout).
