parking facilities currently available, and the extent to which these were used. The results of the survey were analysed to assess parking demand assuming the present level of restraint and to establish to what extent this demand could be met.
Cross-harbour Passenger Movement by Ferry
9.91. A ferry passenger interview survey was carried out by some 40 University Students under the direction of T.T.S.D. staff in June-July 1970 to establish the pattern of cross-harbour passenger movement. It included all ten passenger ferry routes between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, operated by both the Star Ferry and Hongkong & Yaumati Ferry Companies, and continued for 16 hours each day. The field staff sampled and interviewed passengers on board the ferries and asked each one where he began his journey, how he reached the pier before boarding the ferry, where he was going, what type of vehicle he would use to reach his destination and what was the purpose of the trip. 55,000 passengers were interviewed, representing some ten percent of the number of passengers using the passenger ferry service between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
Population Census
9.92. Three questions on the travel characteristics of the land population of Hong Kong were included in the Population Census carried out between 27th February and 9th March, 1971 by the Census and Statistics Department. These were:
(a) Place of work or study
(b) Mode of transport
(c) Time of arrival at destination.
The data was coded for computer processing by the staff of the T.T.S.D., over one million forms being selected as a representative sample.
9.93. To check the person movements suggested by the results of the population census, a study was made of passenger movement across important screen lines throughout the urban areas of the Colony. A complete record was also obtained from the ferry companies of the number of passengers carried during the census period.
