339. A contract was let to lay the section of pipe between Queen's Pier and the north end of the Hong Kong Cricket Club ground, but, because of the late delivery of pipes, this contract had to be closed with only approximately half of the work done.
340. A second contract was let for the laying of the remainder of the pipe on the land and for the concreting of the underwater bearer blocks. The majority of this was completed but work was being held up at the end of the year due to the non-arrival of steel and cast iron specials.
341. Albany Service Reservoir. A Contract was let in April, for the reconstruction of the north wall and the provision of reinforced concrete roof to the reservoir. Work, which was not commenced until November, was well advanced by the end of the year.
342. Tai Lam Chung Scheme. The completed scheme will provide a maximum of 40 M.G. per day. It has been stated in previous reports that the scheme would be carried out in stages, the first stage, estimated to cost $40,000,000 being the minimum work required to provide up to 10 M.G. of water per day. Investigations into costs proved that it would be most uneconomical to proceed with a proposal of this nature in separate distinct stages with little or no regard to what was to follow. It was further realized that an additional 10 M.G. per day would not appreciably alleviate the shortage of water, and approval was given for the first stage to be enlarged to provide a total of 20 M.G. per day. Opportunity was then taken to replan the scheme. The work at present approved, includes certain sections to be completed in full which, while not essential for the provision of 20 M.G. per day, are nevertheless essential to avoid uneconomical replacements and duplications at a later date. The cost is estimated at $80,000,000.
343. The following sections will not need further enlargement:-
(a) Waterfall dam and the three subsidiary dams.
(b) The tunnels and pipelines between Waterfall dam and pumping station at Tsun Wan.
