102. General Post Office. Alterations which began in the G.P.O. Building four years ago were completed. The work became necessary because previous arrangements were inadequate for the increased public demand and increased mail being handled.
103. On the first floor, additional space was made available and alterations carried out to accommodate the Registration Section and Outward Parcels Section, and two small lifts were installed to connect these sections to the public counter on the ground floor.
104. On the ground floor, the Main Sorting Office was completely reorganized with new sorting fittings, and provided with direct access by conveyor belt to Connaught Road in order to reduce handling of mail to and from the G.P.O. pier. A new inward parcels section was built with a separate street entrance for bulk postings.
105. A new and enlarged Letter Box section on two floors was built, and, on the Des Voeux Road frontage, a new public space and counter was provided for the issue of Wireless Licences, Money & Postal Orders.
106. In the basement, vacated by the parcels branch, new vaults were provided for the Postmaster General and Accountant General, together with a store for Transit Air Mail. Additional space, served by two new ramps to street level, was made available for the storage and handling of mail in transit.
107. A new staff canteen was erected on the first floor in the well of the building, a goods lift was installed serving the basement, ground and first floors; and an internal staircase connecting the sorting office and the Registration Branch was constructed.
The work was done in stages so that the work of the Post Office was not interrupted.
