66. The hospital is served by one passenger and bed lift and one service lift, both off a common lift hall so that one acts as a standby for the other.
Owing to the presence of A.R.P. tunnels under the site, considerable difficulty was experienced in the construction of the foundations, and work was consequently delayed.
67. Sisters' Quarters-Queen Mary Hospital. This scheme was referred to in last year's report. Designs were prepared by Messrs. Palmer & Turner for accommodation for 2 matrons, 2 tutor sisters, 6 senior sisters and 35 junior sisters.
68. The scheme consists of a seven storey block providing single rooms and shared bathrooms for the junior sisters, and living room, bedroom and private bathroom for senior sisters. All rooms are arranged on one side of the corridors to allow maximum cross ventilation, and the floors are served by one lift.
69. A two storey wing adjoins the tall block, and consists of 2 matrons' flats each with a living-dining room, bathroom, kitchen, and one or two bedrooms; 2 tutor sisters' flats each with a living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom; and garages for 5 cars. At a lower site level and partly under the two storey wing, is situated the communal dining hall, sitting room, guest room, open verandahs and kitchens.
70. A separate two storey block of servants' quarters is provided, with ten rooms and communal lavatories and kitchens.
The contract was let in March.
71. Social Service Centre, King George V Memorial Park, Hong Kong. This scheme was referred to in last year's report and was designed by Mr. Eric Cumine, A.A.Dip., F.R.I.B.A. This single storey building, which will be converted into a pavilion for the park when the Social Service Centre is moved, consists of an open verandah, a large public waiting room, four interviewing offices, public lavatories and caretaker's quarters. Construction commenced in May and was completed in October.
