7. Mr. J. H. Bottomley, E.D., A.M.I.Struct.E., F.R.S.A., Chief Building Surveyor, continued throughout the year to work on the revision of the Buildings Ordinance and the compilation of draft Regulations and Mr. K. S. Robertson, B.Eng., Building Surveyor, continued to act as Chief Building Surveyor.
8. The staffing position of the Crown Lands and Surveys Office was considerably improved during the year by the recruitment of a number of Estate Surveyors. In January this sub-department took over all Town Planning matters and a new post of Assistant Superintendent of Crown Lands (Planning) was established to take control of this Section.
9. Work was continued on the Five Year Programme of major public works referred to in last year's report and good progress was made. Some additional items were also commenced during the year.
10. A start was made on the first stage of the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir project to augment the Colony's water supply. To conserve storage, severe restrictions of the hours of supply were imposed throughout the year.
11. During the financial year under review the Public Works Department, which undertakes all Government building and engineering work in the Colony, carried out work to the value of over $75 million. These works are described in some detail in the following pages.
