69. A survey carried out during the year revealed that a reasonable proficiency in English was desirable in at least 1,200 posts at constable level. In order to achieve and to maintain this, it is necessary for the Force to produce about 400 competent English speakers each year. Plans to run whole-time courses using the latest language laboratory techniques have been approved in principle and will be put into operation as soon as the necessary staff are available.

OVERSEAS COURSES

70. One senior and eighteen junior officers attended courses of instruction in the United Kingdom, details of which are given in Appendix 11.

PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS

71. The Standard I Examination in police duties and law was held periodically at the Police Training School, and the Standard II and III Examinations were held in April and November. Results were reason- ably satisfactory.

72. The Senior Professional Examination was postponed until the end of 1967 but was held as usual in February 1968. Once again results were fairly good.
