73. On 2nd April, 1967, the first Constable-to-Corporal Promotion Examination was held, and about 3,500 candidates sat the examination at 49 centres throughout the Colony. The multi-choice method was adopted and candidates recorded their answers on data processing cards which enabled very quick calculation of their examination results. A high percentage of passes was recorded. This was the first occasion on which testing by this method had been undertaken in Hong Kong, and it is considered to have been a successful venture.

THE POLICE TRAINING CONTINGENT--INTERNAL SECURITY TRAINING

74. The Police Training Contingent is responsible for the training of all ranks from constable to superintendent in internal security duties. In addition it provides an immediate reserve of man-power for use in any emergency; and also gives leadership training to junior officers and N.C.O.s.

75. The Police Training Contingent provides:

(a) a two-week officers and N.C.O.s Cadre Course attended by a Company Commander, his Inspectors and N.C.O.s followed by (b) a fourteen-week course during which the constables who are to form the Police Riot Suppression Company join the Contingent and receive instruction from the officers and N.C.O.s who attended the Cadre Course.

76. The whole programme is under the constant supervision of the permanent staff headed by the Commandant, a Senior Superintendent of Police.

77. During the year eighteen Riot Suppression Companies, com- prising a total of 2,283 police officers, received training at the Police Training Contingent. A breakdown of those who undertook training is as follows:

16 Gazetted Officers,

125 Inspectors,

288 N.C.O.s,

1,854 Constables.

78. Five Riot Suppression Companies were under training at the Police Training Contingent on 31st March, 1968.

79. In addition to the Company Courses several special training courses were held. These included:
