29. The Colony is divided into four Police Districts. Kowloon District, which is further divided into two Sub-Districts known as Kowloon East and Kowloon West, is commanded by a Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police. Hong Kong Island District is commanded by an Assistant Commissioner of Police as are the New Territories District, with its Headquarters at Tsuen Wan, and Marine District.

30. The distribution of formations within the Force is given diagram- matically in Appendix 2.

POLICE DISTRICTS AND THE UNIFORMED BRANCH

31. All Districts and Sub-Districts are divided into a number of divisions which are in turn divided into Sub-Divisions. Divisions are commanded by Superintendents while Sub-Divisions are commanded by Senior Inspectors or in some cases Inspectors.

32. The main body of the Force is the Uniformed Branch. All police officers start their careers in this branch in order to gain experience of basic police work. The specialist branches, which support the Uniformed Branch in its role of maintaining law and order, draw their manpower from the Uniformed Branch.

33. In addition to staffing Police Stations, performing court duties and undertaking beat patrols, the Uniformed Branch operates Emer- gency Units in Hong Kong Island and N.T. Districts and in Kowloon East and West Sub-Districts. In Kowloon and Hong Kong Island Districts there are radio control rooms which include a '999' emergency call system.

SPECIAL BRANCH

34. The Special Branch is responsible for the prevention and detection of subversive activities and for supplying the intelligence necessary for the maintenance of internal security.

OTHER FORMATIONS

35. The Criminal Investigation Department is described in Part IV, the Traffic Branch in Part V, the Police Training School and Police Training Contingent in Part III and the Communications and Trans- port Branch in Part VI.
