Communications Section
180. The technical personnel of this Section, who are responsible for planning, installing and commissioning radio networks and main- taining electronic equipment, are civilian staff. The officer-in-charge is the Controller, Police Telecommunications. An Assistant Controller directs the activities of Radio Workshops in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories. He has a staff of 51 senior and junior technicians. One senior and four junior stores officers, who are also civilian staff, are responsible for ordering, storing and issuing technical equipment.
181. Two junior Police officers maintain records for more than a thousand official telephones and supervise Control Room staff and telephone operators which together number 130 Rank and File.
182. During the year, the principal achievement of this Section has been the completion of the Radio re-organization scheme. The rationali- zation of radio communications has resulted in a 10-network system of five main and five subsidiary networks. The five main networks consist of one Colony and four District networks. Five subsidiary Company networks provide communications for mobile units of the District Emergency Force.
183. Each network has a number of channels and the flexibility of the system allows each radio set to work on any channel of its allocated network. To eliminate 'black spots', each main network channel operates through a repeater station.
184. 645 radio installations and 18 radar installations in Police launches were in operation during the year. 691 other electronic devices, ranging from tape recorders to metal detectors, were also in use. Public address systems and flood lighting were provided on 112 occasions.
