duties include lecturing to and educating school children in methods of road safety and helping with the organization of exhibitions and campaigns.

Throughout the year no difficulty in recruitment was expe- rienced a total of 65 recruits (including five Women Probationary Inspectors) were taken on strength-and from the general trend, stand- ards appear to be rising.
172. During the year two local officers were promoted to the acting rank of Women Senior Inspector to assume responsibility in the Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Commands and experiments are being under- taken to ascertain the effectiveness of Women Police in other specialized posts.
173. During the year three N.C.O.s and one Woman Police Constable were given written commendations and a further 46 Women Police received oral commendations from their Commanding Officers for good work and the display of initiative and devotion to duty.
POLICE DOG UNIT
174. The Police Dog Unit is housed in its own building with all veterinary facilities for treatment and minor operations. The majority of the dogs now on strength are bred by the unit. Occasionally dogs are accepted as gifts.
175. The establishment of the unit is one Senior Inspector, four N.C.O.s and 31 P.C. handlers and the dog establishment is 35, com- prising 30 patrol and five tracker dogs. The patrol dogs are equally divided with 14 Alsations and 14 Dobermanns; the tracker dogs are Dobermanns. A total of eight puppies, two Alsations and six Dobermanns were bred during the year.
176. The patrol dogs have been mainly utilized in rural and urban areas on preventive duties in and around low density residential areas. The tracker dogs received a total of 277 call outs during the year.
