stopped and searched, 1,563 illegal immigrants were arrested and 115 persons were convicted for assisting the entry of illegal immigrants. 73 craft and five motor vehicles were seized. A daily average of 17 sea-going launches was maintained on outer screen control during the year.
165. Two members of the Rank & File were commended by the Commissioner of Police for bravery and courageous action during rescue operations carried out during the year.
EMERGENCY UNITS
166. In Hong Kong Island and New Territories Districts and in Kowloon East and West sub-districts there are Emergency Units manned by Uniformed Branch personnel. These Units operate on a 24-hour basis, manning patrol cars which are in radio contact with their District Control Room. These patrol cars are directed to give assistance at the scene of incidents reported by the public, or to deal with incidents en- countered on partol and are also available to assist beat officers. The Units also provide prisoner and cash escorts as well as constituting a reserve which can be called upon at all times to deal with unexpected disasters or disorders.
WOMEN POLICE
167. The establishment of the Women Police Branch is 430, inclusive of all ranks. They are utilized in almost every field of Police investigation and play an important role in their dealings with women and children, maintaining close liaison with other government departments and volun- tary agencies in this respect.
168. Beat and patrol duties by Women Police Constables now form an integral part within the divisional structure of the three commands, resulting in a greater variety of casework being handled, and friendly contact with members of the public being made. Furthermore, the em- ployment of Women Police on busy thoroughfares, pedestrian crossings and traffic point duty continues to win favourable comment not only from local residents but also from overseas visitors.
169. During all major Chinese festival celebrations, Women Police were very much in evidence and, as in previous years, acquitted them- selves well in the handling of large crowds of people.
170. In September, an establishment of six Women Police Constables and two N.C.O.s was created in the Road Safety section. These officers'
