185. Apart from its main function of providing music at ceremonial occasions and police parades, both formal and training, the Band has played at 70 public functions which included concerts in the City Hall and public parks, race meetings, football matches, and occasionally at the arrival and departure of large passenger liners.

COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT DIVISION

186. This Division is commanded by a Senior Superintendent of Police. He is assisted by a Senior Staff Officer.

Communications

187. The personnel of this section, who are responsible for the installation, maintenance and storage of radio, radar and other elec- tronic equipment, are all civilians. The officer-in-charge is a Senior Technical Officer with the rank of Controller. An Assistant Controller directs the activities of the technical personnel in three radio workshops established in the three Police Districts of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. The technical establishment is 51 engineers, telecommunications assistants and radio mechanics, and there are one senior and four junior stores officers. Two junior Police Officers are responsible for telephone operators and control room staff which number 114 rank and file.

188. During the year, 558 static, mobile and man-portable trans- mitting/receiving stations were in operation. There were 18 radar equip- ments in Police launches. In addition, 724 other items of equipment were in use, including such items as office intercommunication systems, loud hailers, tape recorders, public address equipment, metal detectors and flood lights.

189. In the course of the year there were 1,349 installation tasks of various kinds. Public address systems and flood lighting were provided on 125 occasions. Other activities included the manufacture of large magnetic map-boards for incident-plotting at control centres.

190. The increase in installation work for the year under review was due mainly to requirements in connexion with the Royal Visit.

191. Progress on the land radio re-organization scheme was delayed because of increased commitments and minor technical difficulties. These difficulties have now been resolved and the first phase of the scheme will be completed in the latter half of 1966.
