officers, and 3 Social Welfare officers. The seminar theme this year was 'Gambling in Hong Kong' and the course high-light was a symposium on this subject held in Legislative Council Chamber on Thursday, 16th December, 1965. Many distinguished persons took part on this occasion, which proved lively, informative and thought-provoking. A résumé of the proceedings was prepared and given a wide circulation.

PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS

78. The Standard I Examination was held at the Police Training School as required and the Standard II and III Examinations held as usual in May and November. The Senior Professional Examination was held in January and July. Results of the Standard II and Senior Profes- sional Examinations were reasonably good but the number of passes in Standard III was disappointingly low, although an analysis of the results of Standard III showed that the younger officers did fairly well.

79. Some progress was made with plans for the Rank and File Promotion Examinations and an announcement was made that they would be introduced fairly soon. There has however been a delay in producing a complete Chinese translation of the General Duties Manual. Once this project is completed, the first examination will be held.

GOVERNMENT LANGUAGE SCHOOL

80. Forty-two officers attended full-time (11-weeks) Cantonese courses. Of these, thirty qualified for the new 1st Certificate, (which equates to the former Standard II), and eleven for the new 2nd Cer- tificate (which equates to the former Standard IV). In addition, sixteen Gazetted and Inspectorate officers and eight civilians attended voluntary evening classes held at the school during the year.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TUITION

81. English tuition is a feature of initial training and further instruc- tion is given in Government classes for selected personnel. In addition, any officer may attend a Government evening institute and seek a refund of fees on satisfactory completion of his course.

82. During the year, the numbers of Rank and File who passed the Government standard examinations in English were:
