INITIAL TRAINING
72. Upon enlistment in the Force, all ranks are given a twenty-six week course of initial training known as the 'A' Course. The cur- riculum includes lectures on public relations, civics, the principles of law and legal procedures, court procedure, Police and Government Regulations, drill, musketry, physical training, self-defence, riot drill, life-saving and first aid. The course is designed not only to train the men in Police duties but also to broaden their general outlook and fit them for responsibility.
In-Service Training
73. Probationary Inspectors return to the Police Training School for a two-week continuation course during their second year of service and for a similar course in their third year. Inspectors in their sixth year attend an advanced training course, the emphasis of which is on junior staff work and administration, designed to prepare them for a sub-divisional command.
74. The centralization of constables' continuation training, which was effected in 1964, proved to be a success. Owing to the high rate of recruitment during the year, however, it was necessary to house continuation training outside the School. Barrack accommodation was converted into temporary classrooms for this purpose at the newly opened Kwun Tong Police Station. In March 1966, it was once again possible to hold all courses at the Police Training School.
75. Other in-service training included Traffic, C.I.D., and N.C.O. courses for the Rank and File.
Special Courses
76. In November 1965 the Sixth Police Staff Course was held. Once again, other Government officers were invited to attend sessions of general interest and the Course achieved its three-fold objective in that it gave a grounding in staff work, a knowledge of current policies and an insight into the work of Government at administrative level.
77. In December 1965 the eighth annual course on Social and Psychological Aspects of Crime was held at the Hong Kong University. It was attended by 23 senior police officers, 2 Army officers, 5 Prison
