ENGLISH LANGUAGE SCHOOL
83. At the start of the year under review a major change of policy took place in connection with teaching of English. Hitherto, Rank and File could voluntarily attend special Police classes in districts at all stages. These classes failed through lack of support and, after a series of reprieves, were regretfully abandoned. Nevertheless, English remains a subject in the constable's basic training course (Course 'A'), during which he is given a good grounding. After this, he may, if he wishes, study English at a Government Evening Institute in the area in which he serves. On satisfactory completion of his course, his fees are refunded. Special police English classes are still held, however, for the advanced student who is keen to reach a high standard.
84. At the end of 1964, police English examinations were discontinued and members of the Force now take Standard English Examinations which are common to all Government departments.
85. During the year, the numbers of Rank and File who passed English Examinations were:

TECHNICAL COURSES
86. All Officers and Rank and File attached to the Marine Division are encouraged to obtain Certificates of Proficiency either as navigators or mechanics. There are 4 classes of Certificates under each heading although the Special Navigation Certificate is obtainable only by Officers because of the high standard of technical English required.
