78. A total of 4,496 applicants for the post of Constable were inter- viewed and tested and of these only a small proportion had the basic physical and educational requirements. 214 recruits were taken on strength and of this total 98 were applicants who had applied during 1960-61. There are still 78 applicants under consideration.
79. During the year, 355 recruit Constables, of whom 23 were women, completed their period of training and passed out from the School. Included in this total were 229 Constables who had been recruited during the previous year. 68 recruit Constables were still undergoing training at the end of the year.
INITIAL TRAINING
80. All ranks, on entry into the Force, attend an 'A' Course, which is an initial training course of six months' duration. The syllabus consists of theoretical and practical instruction in criminal law, crime prevention, road traffic law, accident prevention, laws of evidence, court procedure, preservation of public order, drill, physical training, life saving, self defence and first aid. With the exception of women officers, all are required to be proficient in the handling of the various weapons currently used in the Force. During this period all overseas Probationary Inspectors are taught basic Cantonese and recruit Constables commence to study English. Marine Police recruits are given special instruction in seamanship, port regulations and signalling.
81. During the year training in the use of the rifle ceased, since this weapon has now been replaced by the carbine.
IN-SERVICE TRAINING
82. A progressive programme of training is provided for Junior Officers and Constables with less than four years' service. Details of the courses provided are at Table C of Appendix VI.
83. Advanced courses for Junior officers with five or more years' service were commenced during the year. Three courses have been held this year and another four are planned for next. The object of this course is to prepare officers for duty at Senior Inspector level.
PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS
84. There are three regular professional examinations for junior officers. The Standard I Professional Examination for Probationary Inspectors set in law, Police duties and drill must be passed before
