these officers pass out from the Police Training School. The Standard II Professional Examination in the same subjects is taken before an officer is confirmed in his appointment. The Standard III Professional Examination, again in the same subjects, is the final professional examination for Junior officers. Examinations in Cantonese for overseas officers are held at progressive levels concurrently with these professional examinations.
85. Promotion from the rank of Inspector to Senior Inspector requires the candidate to have had at least seven years' service, to have passed the Standard III Professional Examination and to pass the special Senior Inspectors Promotion Examination. Final selection depends on recommendations made to the Commissioner of Police by an Interview Board consisting of the Deputy Commissioner and the Assistant Commissioners.
86. Officers promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent are normally drawn from Chief Inspectors and Senior Inspectors. Promotion depends on successfully passing a Senior Professional Examination and on the recommendation of the Commissioner, advised by an Interview Board.
SPECIAL COURSES
87. Apart from general training, other courses of a specialized nature were attended by selected officers.
88. In December 1961, four Superintendents and twenty Inspectorate officers, attended the 4th Course on the Social and Psychological aspects of crime, held at the University of Hong Kong. This nine-day course was organized by the University's Department of Extra-Mural Studies.
89. In February 1962, eight newly promoted Assistant Superin- tendents attended a twelve-day Police Staff Course, which was run as part of the Government Training Unit's Staff Course for all Government Departments.
TECHNICAL COURSES
90. 223 members of the Force completed driving courses at the Police Driving School and 195 qualified.
