BRITISH PASSPORT OFFICE

240. The volume of work in this section continued to increase as will be seen from the comparative figures below. The number of British passports issued to Chinese proceeding to the United Kingdom for the purpose of employment rose to 927 as against 839 last year; in addition 7 passports were issued to Chinese proceeding to Commonwealth coun- tries for the same purpose. The number of passports issued to Chinese students to enable them to go abroad to continue their studies increased to 730 as against 663 for the previous year. Of this number 140 were issued to students proceeding to the United Kingdom.

REGISTRATION OF ALIENS

241. The total recorded movement of aliens in and out of the Colony was 250,290 as against 237,237 for the previous year. During the year the number of registered aliens in the Colony amounted to 8,487 compared with 6,250 for last year. For purposes of registration Chinese are not treated as aliens unless they are nationals of some countries other than China.

242. During the year, 1,135 European stateless refugees arrived from China, under the auspices of the United Nations Refugee Organization, and 1,254 refugees departed for various destinations. At the end of the year there were still 437 remaining in the Colony.

243. This section also issued 6,183 visas and 10,388 extensions of stay as compared with 6,230 visas and 10,034 extensions of stay for last

year.
