POLICE RECREATION CLUB

235. Members of the Force, the auxiliaries and pensioners of the rank of Sub-Inspector and above are eligible for membership of the Police Recreation Club. The social and sporting functions organized by the club during the year were well attended.

IMMIGRATION

236. The Commissioner of Police is concurrently the Immigration Officer and is responsible for maintaining the register of Aliens. For general purposes, the Immigration Branch is administered by a Senior Superintendent, known as the Deputy Immigration Officer.

237. The recorded movement for the year of persons into and out of the Colony by land, sea and air was 2,343,035. The main lines of movement were between Hong Kong and China and Hong Kong and Macau.

238. The quota system designed to regulate the entry of persons from China across the frontier continued to operate smoothly. During the summer holidays and the Chinese New Year festival, conditions were again relaxed to enable students to enter the Colony for the purpose of visiting their families and relations. The actual movement figures for Chinese between Hong Kong and China were 465,975 arrivals and 469,963 departures. The figures for aliens leaving and entering the Colony via Lo Wu for the same period were 2,800 arrivals and 1,673 departures. Organized groups of Chinese continued to pass through the Colony en route to China. The majority of these transients were from Indonesia, and other South East Asian countries. During the period under review 35 vessels carrying 12,229 transients entered Hong Kong. This is a considerable increase compared with last year when the figures were 31 shipments involving 5,719 transients.

239. The movement between Hong Kong and Macau by Chinese residents is still considerable. Chinese arrivals were 501,332 as against 486,807 departures. The figures for British subjects and aliens were 29,310 arrivals and 28,096 departures. A total of 2,220 persons including
