Star, a local award, was presented to a man who at great personal risk saved five persons from drowning during the torrential rain storms in June, 1957.
CRIMES CLEARED UP
102. Crimes cleared up include those for which a person is charged or summoned, those taken into consideration by a Court when an offender is found guilty on another charge, those where a person is deported under Section 3 of the Deportation of Aliens Ordinance and, in certain cases, those where a person is known to be guilty but cannot be prosecuted for some reason, e.g. because he has died.
MISCELLANEOUS OFFENCES
103. Miscellaneous offences increased by 39,940 during the year under review, the total for the year being 231,696 as compared with 191,756 in 1956/57. Details of miscellaneous offences are set out in Appendix VII Table B. These include:
Common Assault
104. Of the total of 12,868 reported, 12,490 were reports of trivial disputes settled at police stations and not taken to Court.
Hawking Offences
105. There has been a marked increase in the number of offences of obstruction during the year, the total of 44,981 offences being 16,770 in excess of the total for the previous year.
Deportation Offences
106. Under this heading are included the figures for persons removed from the Colony by virtue of orders made under the Deporta- tion of Aliens Ordinance and also for breaches of the orders so made. During the year 496 persons, mostly members of illegal societies and drug traffickers, were deported. Of this total fifty six are known to have returned. There were 659 cases of breaches of deportation orders dealt with before the Courts, as compared with the figure of 1,037 in 1956/57. Action was taken against 232 persons under the Emergency (Detention Orders) Regulations during the year. Of this total sixty four, mainly active triad officials, were under detention on the 31st March, 1958.

107. These reports totalled 153,075. As each such report necessitates some form of action before being classified they add considerably to
