ANNEX (F)
REPORT OF THE PATHOLOGICAL INSTITUTE, HONG KONG.
(1) Introductory.
The activities of the Institute were able to expand in various directions throughout the year in spite of constant difficulties due
to delay in obtaining necessary supplies and to shortage of staff which could not be replaced by suitable men. Fortunately, the unexpected arrival of three separate consignments of laboratory goods under the Young Plan proved of the greatest assistance at critical moments and towards the end of the year the prospect
of obtaining most of the essential equipment and supplies in the not too distant future appeared such brightor. As usual, the laboratories of the Royal Navy and the Royal Army Medical Corps gure every possible help, which is most gratefully acknowledged.
With regard to buildings, the Institute has had no major repair work carried out since the liberation and is in consequence in dire need of attention. In particular, the uneatisfactory state of the animal house was rominented on by H.E. the Goveruor during an official visit to the Tnstitute in November. The Kowloon branch, now well established in the grounds of the Kowloon Hospital, appears to be excellently situated and progress- ing well. At the Queen Mary Hospital the setting up of a small laboratory to deal with the more immediate demands of clinical pathology is an innovation which was long overdue; and in order to provide more permanent quarters for our activities there, alteratious were parried out to a portion of the former decon- tamination block into which our branch is expected to move saON. It is hoped to complete the staffing eventually by the provision of a full-time pathologist, as is the case in Kowloon.
In April, charges for raceites and the examination of laboratory specimens were increased to meet the higher cost of materials and production. As a result, it is anticipated that the estimated income for the year will be exceeded from the sale of raccioca alone.
The following additions were made to the library, which now contains a fair proportion of recent editions which are normally
