Scientific journals commenced to arrive and towards the end of the year were being received regularly, but it was with much regret that we learnt that owing to currency restrictions the supply of American publications was to be suspended.

Dr. A. V. Greaves, who was mainly responsible for building up the Institute into its prewar state of efficiency, retired at the beginning of the year. During the summer, when the prevent writer was on four months leave, Dr. E. T. Loke successfully took avor. Dr. Alvares continued to be in charge of the Kowloon branch.

(2) Protozoology and Helminthology.

2. Blood films for malario.—Four thousand six hundred and fifty-four films were examined for the parasites of malaria. Five hundred and sixteen contained parasites. Classification of types is shown in the table,

3. Other blood parasites.--Sp. recurrentia was found present in eight films out of the 4,654 cxamined for malaria.

4. Filaria-Three films were examined for flurial embryos and all found positive. The infecting parasite was M. hancrafti in every instancə.

5. Faces-Seven thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine atools were examined for parasites or their ors and for the presence or absence of the typical cytological picture of bacillary dysentery. The enormous infestation with Ascaris referral to last year, shows no sign of decrease, e.g. Ascaris was found present in mare than 70% of candidates for the Police Force.

(3) Serology.

The Kahn reaction.—Thirty-four thousand five hundred and seventeen sera were tested. This number is a record, aud mach credit is due to the stuff concerned who made such a volume of work possible, as our present Kahn tubes show all the signs of aged glassware and by normal standards are totally inadequate in number.
