(6) Proparation of Vaccine Lympb.
The amount of lymph prepared this year is greater than at any time in the history of the Institute. Smallpox was smouldering in the Colony all during the summer and flared up into a full sized epidemic at the end of October; consequently the Health Division asked us to furnish lymph on an enormous scale for a big vaccination campaign to last at least until the end of the year, This we were able
to do by a really great effort on the part of our staff. Fortunately the buffalo-calf supply proved surprisingly good and what was of equal importance the calves were nourished and healthy. The average pulp collected per calf was also a record.
I cannot forbear to point out what the Colony owes this Institute in respect of the value of the vaccine lymph prepared by it as measured by the price which this lymph would cost if purchased from the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, which is one of the large scale producera in Great Britain and which may be taken as an example. The cost of 67,600 e.c. at the prices ruling in 1946 would be £84,500.0, 0. The total budget of this Institute for the current year is £5,351. 0. 0.
