Ancillary Works

104. Work on a transformer house by the China Light & Power Co., Ltd. is in hand and a site for a kerosene store has been leased to Messrs. Caltex Asia Ltd. Provision is being made to construct sheltered stalls for a hawkers bazaar facing the shops to be allocated for the sale of fish, meat and poultry.

Services and Schools

105. Liaison with the Public Works Department and the private architects for the schools continued. On the recommendation of the Architects for the estate, a height limit was set on the school buildings with the object of preserving the overall design conception of the Estate.

106. This scheme provides for the construction on a site of about 7 acres, a total of 2,114 flats to accommodate about 12,600 people together with 21 shops, an estate office, and a pavillion with party rooms. The estimated total cost of the scheme, which was fully de- scribed in the 1959-60 Annual Report, is $17,152,640.

107. A portion of the site is occupied by the Public Works Depart- ment workshops and will not be vacated until early 1963. It was there- fore necessary to divide the construction work into two phases, the first phase representing about four-fifths of the whole, and providing living accommodation for about 9,800 people in 1,624 flats. The 21 shops with living accommodation attached will be in this first phase, together with the estate office, caretakers' quarters, party rooms and stores. The capital cost of Phase I is estimated at $14,496,000.

General Contract

108. At the time of writing two of the four blocks in Phase I had been completed and 890 flats had been handed over to the Management Section for letting. These blocks are now called Hibiscus House and Magnolia House. The remaining two blocks, Rose and Narcissus Houses are nearing completion.
