The above results show that 6 First Class and 15 Second Class Certificates of Competency in Radiotelegraphy were issued which allowed the holders to obtain posts as Radio Officers abroad British registered ships.

Radar Maintenance

84. Sixteen candidates were examined during the year on behalf of the Director of Marine.

Ship Radio Surveys and Inspections

85. Technical staff were made available to the Director of Marine to survey ship radio stations for ensuring compliance with the Inter- national Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and to advise the Director of Marine on suitable locations for equipment in new ship buildings. 225 Ship Radio Stations were surveyed for the issue of Safety Radio Certificates and 83 vessels inspected. The Direction Finding Equipment on 109 vessels was recalibrated as required by the Radio Surveyor.

Interference

86. Interference affecting Government and privately owned tele- communication services for internal and external communication was investigated and remedial action taken wherever possible. 46 cases caused by electronic industrial machines causing disruption to V.H.F. Circuits were investigated and cleared. A total of 285 visits was paid to work premises, resulting in 202 machines being referred to their owners for adjustment or repair consequent upon these investigations. 220 unlicensed machines were found distributed through 53 of the factories visited. 45 cases of severe interference, attributable to a variety of other causes, warranted intensive investigation. 6 cases of interference to domestic sound reception and 1 case of interference to domestic television reception were also investigated.

A pronounced increase in interference caused by electronic industrial machines during the last quarter of the year gave grounds for concern. A substantial number had to be sealed against further use until such time as necessary adjustments had been made.
