30. The Post Office Training School held six six-week courses which were attended by a total of 96 clerks. These clerks were also given practical training after the course.
31. English Language classes for Assistant Postmen were conducted by the Training Unit of Establishment Branch, Colonial Secretariat.
Temporary Staff for Christmas
32. A casual labour force of 55 clerks and 110 labourers was engaged to assist in the handling of mail during the Christmas pressure period.
General
FINANCE
33. Revenue collected by the Department amounted to $101,156,- 496.84, an increase of $10,489,909.38 (11.6%) over the previous year. This is the first time collections have exceeded $100 million.
34. In addition, $5,067,622.50 was collected from the sale of revenue stamps. Included in revenue from stamp sales is $4,525,480 in respect of fees for Certificates of Origin issued by the Department of Commerce and Industry.
35. Expenditure totalled $53,913,850.88, an increase of $10,525,133.86 over the previous year. This increase was mainly due to increased salary payments brought about by salary revisions and increased air mail conveyance payments.
36. Payments amounting to $2,717,514.55 were made on behalf of all Government departments for provision of telephone services.
37. The business turnover, including remittance transactions, totalled $219,999,480.46, an increase of $24,949,503.20 (12.8%) over the previous
year.
Wireless Licences
38. Issues of telecommunications licences of all types, including Broadcast Receiving licences, produced $4,154,260, exceeding the pre- vious year's total by $208,151.
Remittance Services
39. 56,664 Money Orders were issued and paid to a total value of $5,630,463.14. This was an increase of 13,970 transactions (32.7%) and $729,716.84 over the previous financial year.
