52. The "Harborphone" service was inaugurated during the year under review and facilities are now available for any ship moored within the Harbour area to be fitted with V.H.F. radiotelephone equipment on hire for direct connexion to subscribers of the Hong Kong telephone Company's exchange using normal duplex working. The service is proving very popular and is in advance of facilities offered in most ports elsewhere.

53. The radio facsimile service, hitherto available to Singapore and London was extended to Japan.

54. The inland telegram service was used sufficiently to indicate that it does fulfil a public need.

*55. Cable and Wireless also continued to be responsible for the technical maintenance of the meteorological aeradio, ship- shore telegraphy and Broadcasting services.

ACCOMMODATION

56. Alterations to the main building culminated in the official opening by His Excellency the Governor of the new Public Hall and Counter in the main building on 11th May, 1953, and from that date all public business-hitherto conducted on three separate floors-has been concentrated at the one Public Counter at ground floor level.

57. Another result of the alterations was to permit the replacement of 2,170 mixed old type Post Office Boxes by 3,000 standardized boxes which were brought into use on 24th August, 1953.

58. Other minor improvements included the provision of an electrical hoist and a conveyor to facilitate the handling of mails from launch to office and vice-versa.

59. Whilst however the Public situation at Head Office was eased considerably the pressure behind the scenes gets heavier, as must be obvious when facilities considered adequate for a
