TELECOMMUNICATIONS

47. Telephones. The Hong Kong Telephone Company Limited provides a Public Telephone Service which covers Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories including the adjacent island of Cheung Chau, and serves both the general public and the Hong Kong Government.

48. At 31st March, 1954, the total number of direct exchange lines working on the Company's system was 30,983 and the number of extensions 15,018, making a total of 46,001 stations compared with 38,916 in the previous year.

49. The Company has gone rapidly ahead with its pro- gramme of development. New exchanges have been installed in the Eastern area of Victoria and at Shaukiwan. The rural Exchange at Fanling in the New Territories was re-opened, whilst on the Island the old exchanges at Repulse Bay and Stanley have been replaced by modern equipment with increased capacity. Considerable progress has also been made in the installation of new underground cables to meet present and future demands.

OTHER COMMUNICATIONS

50. Cable and Wireless Limited continued to be responsible for all telegraphic services, and, in conjunction with the Hong Kong Telephone Company links with China, Macao, Philippines, Formosa, Japan, U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, Western Europe, Singapore, Malaya, Jesselton, Bangkok, Indonesia (Bandung and Djakarta), Australia and New Zealand. A circuit to Bombay was added during the year. Up to 10 circuits can now be handled simultaneously.

51. The short-range Ship/shore radiotelephone service continues to grow in popularity as more ships become fitted with suitable equipment. Excellent results have been obtained up to 500 mile range.
